Good Morning Lowcountry weighs in this morning with "GMLc's Spoleto Edition, Volume 2," a column devoted to the P&C tradition of creating, collecting and spreading the distinct Charleston literary form "Spoleto haiku," or "Spoku."
Invented some years ago by a former city editor looking to start an in-house writing game, Spokus later escaped to the larger world via GMLc. A Spoku follows the conventions of Japanese haiku, only the subject is the festival experience instead of the natural world. A classic example:
Gin Vermouth Olives
Pate on tasty toast points
Have you seen Nigel?
Most early examples were humorous, but lately people have been writing more evocative, serious poems. GMLc is collecting them, and if you've got one you want to leave here, we'll pass it along...
