A Michael Y. wrote in yesterday with an interesting question: Will the short fiction winning entries from Piccolo be published anywhere?"
We didn't know the answer, so we ran a quick check over at the Piccolo website:
Nine stories on the theme of
"Right" have been selected for the sixth annual Piccolo Fiction Open.
These original stories were selected from over 70 submissions from
across South Carolina and beyond, and all fall into the category of
short-short stories, or microfiction. The winning stories will also be
recorded for broadcast by South Carolina Public Radio's Your Day. The
winning stories and writers are: If the Giant Retired and the
Beanstalk was Still Intact by Maureen Sherbondy of Raleigh; My
Willing Blade by Heather Magruder of Taylors; Right Credo by Vivian
Bikulege of Beaufort; Marriage Rite by Jonathan Sanchez of
Charleston; Mint Juleps by Audra Kerr Brown of Summerville; Working
Hand by Jason Zwiker of Charleston; Praying for a Ride to Cape Cod
by Ceille Baird Welch of Hopkins; Mount Pleasant Bypass by Wesley
Moore of Folly Beach; and Divinely Right by Mr. Hughes of Columbia.
There were readings from the stories at the City Gallery at Waterfront Park on June 5, but if you missed that and you're not tuned-in to public radio, then these stories are basically invisible. So Thursday we made an offer to the city's Office of Cultural Affairs, which runs Piccolo: Give us permission, and we'll publish the stories here at Spoletoblog.
